(Note: The text of The Proceedings was written by several different settlers; William Symonds [Simons], who was not a settler, gathered and edited the writings for publication in 1612. Later, when Captain John Smith published The General History: The Third Book, he included much of the text of The Proceedings. Therefore, quotes from the text of The Proceedings are often attributed to Smith, since his name is on The General History: The Third Book. Unfortunately, this has done a lot to create an image of Captain Smith as self-aggrandizing, since some of these quotes praise his leadership, work ethic, courage, etc. It is difficult to attribute specific passages to specific authors among the authors of The Proceedings, but the important thing to note is that Captain Smith is not the author of The General History: The Third Book.)
